Why I am an Officiant

As I approach twenty years as an officiant, I thought it might be nice to reflect on this wonderful journey.

I truly believe that I have one of the best jobs in the world, I get to share blessings and joy. Every time a couple asks me to officiate a ceremony for them, it is a new and exciting chance to witness a story that is unfolding. And, I get to be there right in the middle of things.

I do want to know who they are, how they met and how they decided to take this step to commitment. I want to know about their families and traditions. I want to know their special moments and their dreams. Some couples tell me they just want something short and sweet, but I always make sure to provide that with a special touch that makes the day a beautiful memory.

It is a special privilege to be able to a spokesperson for a couple, announcing to the world that they are claiming this one special day as theirs. I remind the couple of those who have “loved them into existence”, being their families, friends, co-workers, etc. My role is telling all of those presence in body and spirit, that these two individuals intend to share and experience life together and asking them all for their continued encouragement, love and respect for the two being joined together.

I like to have the couple “tie the knot” in a simple activity and encourage them to continue to share with each other in ways that will nurture each of them individually and their relationship. I remind them that honest and timely communication is necessary and that doing so with kindest is essential. I also extend this to their whole family as we include a family bonding ceremony after the actual ceremony if requested.

It is so much fun to see the creative ways a couple chose to create this day with location, decorations, heart-felt traditions and amazing vows. Truly every ceremony is different and I can’t begin to convey the blessings I feel being able to be the person standing with a couple, helping them to unite their lives.
